The Graffita hand painted Italian dinnerware set from MERCATO’s Historical Collection is based on a 16th century design. In the original method, a thin layer of colored glaze was applied over the clay and then a design was scratched (sgraffire – to scratch) into the top layer, revealing the brownish color of the red clay below.
Our collection translates this into a hand painted tableware design. Each piece in the collection is hand painted with a cream and a brown colored glaze to represent the original scratched method. The Graffita dinnerware collection represents an anuthentic ceramic design technique that is a true example of Italian style. Each dinner plate, salad plate, pasta bowl and cup and saucer is created just as it would have been when this design originated– hand thrown on a potter’s wheel.
