A bowl with this kind of design is often referred to as a passata bowl. These bowls were used in southern Italy and in the region of Puglia to make passata, which is an uncooked tomato puree.  Typically, they are glazed and spattered with green paint on the inside and are left unglazed on the outside. The bowls were utilitarian and commonly used for other tasks as well.  This small passata bowl is the perfect size to use in a decorative way.  It looks great on a table or counter.
