This vintage decorative object was once used as a bed warmer. The dome shape is made of hand carved wood slats. The wood was moistened to make it pliable and then bent and nailed into place forming the dome shape. There is a hook at the top of the dome from which a cloth filled with warm stones would hang. The dome was then placed under sheets and blankets to create a pocket of warm air.
Customers have made hanging light fixtures with these decorative domes as well as baskets. Most recently, a textile artist purchased one to hold her beautiful hand dyed yarn.
