This small painted and decorated “arte povera” chest of drawers circa 1750 is from the northern Italy resort area called RIva di Garda in the region of Trentino Alto Adige. Arte Povera refers to a very simple utilitarian country furniture, often made from non-precious native woods, such as pine or chestnut depending on the availability of the wood locally. The decoration was usually applied to hide imperfections in the wood and to enhance an otherwise simple interior.
The appeal of this antique chest of drawers is the unpretentious way it is decorated. The prominent colors are a rich teal and deep red with soft white detailing. The wear and patina is quite nice too.
