This red painted Italian antique chest of drawers is wonderful. The simplicity lends itself to work well in many interiors. Turned knobs, tapered legs, and a working key and drawers make it very functional.
This antique chest of drawers is Tuscan, more specifically it was acquired from a private home in Asciano, Siena. The red color comes from the pigment cinabrese (red vermilion or cinnabar in English) and was derived from minerals found in the volcanic areas. It was used widely from the Roman times up until the 19th century. The area of Asciano lies not far from Monte Amiata in the Crete Senesi and is know for its red earth and sulphur springs.
